Recently I have fallen into a new found interest in telephone poles. I was fascinated by the fact that these once living organisms were uprooted and used to outline our infrastructure systems while still emulating their nature forms.
From researching telephone poles I came to understand that generally they are now called Utility Poles, and I got particularly interested on the appendages that live on utility poles.
There are many different types of appendages that are attached to utility poles but I am particularly interested in one’s that gather data, specifically measuring us without our knowledge. From here I wanted to create a machine that asks a question of an environment, and frame what is happening to us for others so that they are aware of it; and ultimately create an appendage that works as an intermediary between the surveillor and the surveilled.
Ideally I consider this a first iteration and a step towards creating a more fully functioning appendage. At the moment a distance sensor triggers the monitor to inform the surveilled that the pole it is attached to is surveilling them.
