When this assignment, I immediately thought of the Sol Lewitt sculpture “Five Modular Units.” The sculpture is located in the Storm King Art Center in the Hudson Valley.
I debated between building 5 singular and miniaturized versions of Five Modular Units, or five similar cubes that would be put together to form Five Modular Units.
I decided to first make one cube, put together by pieces of 1/4 in Basswood.
I cut pieces into lengths of 3in and 4in and glues them together, making the cube.
Surprised with how well they stayed together, I showed them to classmate Nick Gregg, who suggested that a turn it to stand on one of the corners. Going from there, we figured to turn each of the following cubes, and connect them by the corresponding corner.
We then worked in Rhino to make a mockup of it to get a real feel for it.
I sanded down the corner of the first hot glued piece and really loved the way it looked standing up and decided to run with it.
I decided to connect each piece with 3/16in dowel, I went to Blick and cleaned them out of 1/2 basswood and 3/16x 36in dowel, choosing to overcompensate. I marked each piece with a 1/4 in mark and drilled in 3/16 in with the doweling jig.
From there each connection had wood glue added to it to finish.
With each of the five repeatable “modular” cubes finished, I am going to connect each of them tomorrow after class. This will be done either going straight up or in a way I have not come up with yet.
